A piece of local wine culture
Winegrowing in the city of Zurich is by no means just nostalgia. With a lot of passion and expertise, Landolt wines are allowed to help shape a piece of local wine culture. And: the current vintages are excellent.
"For us, wine is fascination, obligation and dedication at the same time", Marc Landolt likes to say. His person stands for the traditional Zurich company, which the 57-year-old is the sixth generation of his family to manage.
Three vineyards, around 30,000 vines on six hectares and up to 35,000 bottles of wine per year - the Landolt Winery is the largest wine producer in the city of Zurich. "But it's not important who's bigger now," says Landolt. "It seems more important to me that we are allowed to help shape a piece of local wine culture."
"It's only possible with each other."
Besides Landolt, this culture is upheld by the municipal estate Juchhof, the Wegmann wine and fruit house and Zweifel wines. "It's only possible with each other," says Landolt, who has "his"
wines according to exact specifications in the winery Zweifel in Höngg.
And these wines have it in them. The freshly bottled white wines as well as the rosé of the 2019 vintage have a quality that has rarely been seen before. The same can be said of the red wines from 2018. And the two Stadtzürcher sparkling wines are praised by connoisseurs. For example, Vreni Kaufmann - sommelière as well as hostess of the top restaurant "Rössli" in Illnau - described the Brut Blanc de Noir as "the best Swiss sparkling wine".
A master of his field
The grapes are produced by master winemaker Nik Zeljkovic, founder of Rebwerk GmbH. He knows perfectly how to deal with the different conditions in the Bürgli in Enge, the Burghalde in Riesbach and the Sonnenberg in Hottingen. He cultivates the grape varieties Pinot Noir, Merlot, Zweigelt, Riesling-Sylvaner, Kerner, Gewürztraminer and of course the Zurich Ursorte Räuschling.
Zeljkovic is very satisfied with the new vintages. "The 2019 white wines are fresh, show a present fruit and a good balance between alcohol, acidity and sweetness. And the red 2018s are strong, deep red," the expert judges.
